The Japanese Web Page Contest is organized by Shunko Muroya, (Japanese Advisor, Alberta Education) in cooperation with "Japan Foundation, Toronto," "Alberta Education," and "University of Alberta Prince Takamado Japan Centre for Teaching and Research."

A. Contest
  1. The 2008 Japanese Web Page Contest is open to schools which teach Japanese as a second/foreign language anywhere in the world.
  2. The Japanese Web Page Contest website hosts the contest galleries which will have links to all the contest entry websites.
  3. Divisions:
      There are seven divisions for the contest:
        - Grade/Year 12 Division (or total of 250 or more classroom contact hours)
        - Grade/Year 11 Division (or total of 250 or less classroom contact hours)
        - Grade/Year 10 Division (or total of 150 or less classroom contact hours)
        - Junior Secondary Division (Grade/Year 7-9)
        - Elementary/Primary Division (Grade/Year K-6)
        - Japanese Language School Category A Division (with students studying Japanese as a second language for a total of 200 or less classroom contact hours)
        - Japanese Language School Category B Division (with students studying Japanese as a second language for a total of 200 or more classroom contact hours)
  4. Each school is allowed only one entry per division.
  5. Each website entry must be the work of a group consisting of at least three students and a teacher.
  6. The entry form submission closing date is Friday, April 25, 2008. Entry forms must be submitted electronically. Click on “Entry Form” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website and follow the directions there.
  7. All entry websites must be uploaded by Wednesday May 21, 2008, and must not be changed afterwards until the Judges finish screening the entry websites.
  8. Judges will hold a meeting to screen the entry websites in the last week of May. “Judging Criteria” is available on the contest website. Click on “Judging Criteria” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website.
  9. The Contest gallery website opens to the public Monday, June 2, 2008.
  10. The contest organizer will use email to distribute all information and announcements related to the Contest.
B. Objectives
  1. Have fun creating web pages using the target language, Japanese!!
  2. Provide opportunities and incentives to learn how to use Japanese on computers (for both teachers and students).
  3. Develop ICT skills through interesting and challenging activities (for both teacher and students).
  4. Use the knowledge and skills obtained through the contest to create your own Japanese program website (for teachers).
  5. Provide opportunities for teachers to develop and exhibit their ICT skills to support their position.
  6. Expand teachers’ professional versatility by teaching Japanese and ICT at the same time.
  7. Promote your school’s Japanese program.
  8. Provide skills for “Electronic Portfolio (e-Portfolio)” and other self-promoting projects for students.
 C. Contest Schedule (as of February 29 2008. The schedule is subject to change.)
  February through March Correspondence Course for “Creating Web Pages” for teachers 
  Late February Contest Guidelines to be announced
  April 25 (Friday) Entry Form submission closing date
  March through May Teacher and students work on creating their web pages
  May 21 (Wednesday) Last day for participants to upload web pages
  The last week of May Judges will screen participating websites to decide prizes
  June 2 (Monday) Contest galleries open for public viewing
  June 6 (Friday) Contest results will be announced.
     
D. Technical Regulations
  1. Participants must obtain a “Yahoo! ID” for the Contest and use the Yahoo! Geocities Canada free web space for the Contest. It is free of charge. (For details, click on “Web Page Instructions” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website.)
  2. Participants must agree to provide the Yahoo! ID and password to the Contest organizer. This is strictly for administrative purposes (checking the size of the website and the uploading date) and also for the organizer to assist participants when technical problems arise. There are boxes in the entry form (click on “Entry Form” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website) to type in the ID and the password. You cannot submit your entry form without providing this information to the contest organizer.
  3. Participants must use Microsoft Word as the web page editor for the Contest. This ensures a level playing field for all participants. No other web page editing software (such as Dreamweaver, FrontPage and Homepage Builder, etc.) is allowed. The Contest organizer will check the source code of the web pages.
  4. Each entry (the entire website, including all files uploaded to the Geocities server) can be no larger than 15 MB. The Contest organizer will check the size of the web site.
  5. File types with the following four extensions are allowed for the Contest websites.
      .html .gif .jpg .png .bmp  
  6. No video and sound clips are allowed on the Contest websites.
  7. Visual effects which require plug-ins such as Flash Player and Shockwave Player are not allowed on the Contest websites.
  8. Java script is allowed on the Contest websites.
E. Web Page Designing Regulations
  1. The following topics are designated for each division.
     - Grade/Year 12 Division Gallery

    (Grade/Year 7-9)
    スポーツ Sports
     - Elementary/Primary Division Gallery
    (Grade/Year K-6)
    たべもの Food
     - Japanese Language School Category A
    (with students studying Japanese as a second language for a total of 200 or less classroom contact hours)
    しゅみ Hobbies
     - Japanese Language School Category B
    (with students studying Japanese as a second language for a total of 200 or more classroom contact hours)
    休暇 / 旅行 Vacation / Travel
  2. The contents of the entry website must meet the designated topic listed above.
  3. The contents of the entry website should use language which has been or is being studied in the Japanese classroom.
  4. The entry website should be designed with the collaboration of the teacher and students.
  5. Each entry website must consist of a home page created by the teacher and web pages created by students. The homepage must display school name and links to the pages students created.
  6. No private or individual information such as addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates and photographs of students are allowed on the entry website.
  7. Observe the copyright laws. Do not use any copyright materials (text, image, photo, etc.). For example, you cannot use a image of ドラえもん on the website without permission from the copyright holder.
  8. If you need to quote, you must indicate the source.
  9. Links are allowed only within your website pages. The only outside link allowed are to the Japanese Web Page Contest website (www.japanesewebpagecontest.com), your school’s official website and your Japanese program website.
  10. Each page of the entry website must have a “Japanese Web Page Contest” logo with a link to the home page of the Contest website (www.japanesewebpagecontest.com) at the left top corner.
     
    Right-click on the logo here, chose “Save Picture As…”, and save the logo in your website folder.
  11. Each page of the entry website must have a link to the home page of your website at the bottom.
 F. Web Page Instructions
  1. The contest organizer will provide correspondent sessions to assist teachers in learning how to create web pages. You can also self-teach the entire sessions by going through the instructions by yourself. Click on “Creating Web Pages” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website.
  2. The following instructional documents are available at the Contest website. Click on “Web Page Instructions” in the table of contents in the left column of the Contest website.

G. Results
  1. Prizes (which will be announced later) will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each division.
  2. Some special prizes will be also awarded.
  3. A meeting for judges will be held in the last week of May 2008.
  4. The Contest results will be announced on Friday, June 6 2008.
